​(My Body Speaks in) A Broken Semaphore explores the idea of pain as a tool of communication for the body. Metal shards jut out at angles from soft, smooth wax. The welds and base are partially hidden by the build up of layers, just as a pain’s source may remain hidden with only the sharp surface twinge understood. Bodies are marvellous systems, but they frequently breakdown in ways we do not fully understand. A Broken Semaphore is a visual representation of the way pain can feel like one of the body’s languages, though one which can be disjointed and misleading especially for those bodies living with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder.
